Women’s Swiftwater Rescue Course
Nothing builds confidence like mastering your own rescue skills with other women boaters! This American Canoe Association (ACA) Swiftwater Rescue Course is taught by an amazing teacher, Lauren Chapple, who creates a supportive and empowering environment for female river paddlers.
Over two days, you’ll learn to read rivers with precision, identify hazards, and develop effective rescue and prevention strategies. Through hands-on practice, you’ll build a toolkit of essential skills to help you and your paddling partners stay safe and confident on the water.
Using ropes, rescue vests, and other tools of the trade, we’ll alternate between swimming through controlled rapids and practicing real-world rescue scenarios. Each session focuses on developing both a rescue mindset and the technical skills needed to manage challenging situations on the river.
By the end of the course, you’ll not only gain new skills—you’ll join a community of women who support and uplift each other on and off the water.
Completion of this 2-day course earns you an ACA participation certificate, recognized by most river outfitters, kayak schools, and outdoor programs.
- Who: Kayakers, Rafters, SUPers, packrafters & whitewater canoeists
- What: A two-day class on the Animas River. The classroom session will be at the 4Corners Cafe (no coffee served) behind the shop.
- What to bring: Cold weather paddling equipment, any throw ropes, rescue vests or other safety gear you already own. Gear lists and a welcome letter will be sent out prior to the course. The instructor will provide a cross section of rescue gear for you to experiment with.

The Southwest can have very sudden and unpredictable changes in weather. All classes run rain or shine, unless there are weather related safety concerns. All programs may be changed at our discretion. To keep our classes affordable, we must fill a program with a minimum amount of participants. We reserve the right to cancel the program if the minimum amount of participants is not met. A full refund will be provided if a class is cancelled, and you will be notified no later than 48 hours before the beginning of the class.
If you need to reschedule or cancel your reservation, please do so 48 hours or more before the beginning of the class. Cancellations within 48 hours of the beginning of the program are non- refundable. If you wish to reschedule within 48 hours before the beginning of the program, we can provide a 50% credit towards the rescheduled class.
