Adult Level 2: River Maneuvering
This class is designed as a continuation of the fundamentals introduced in our level 1 kayaking class. We will spend 2 days refining these skills, as well as introducing more advanced skills.
Day 1 we often get in our solar heated pool for a quick skills check. From there, we will pick up some lunch, and head to the Animas River! We start on a slow moving section, and have time to brush up on our forward strokes, draw strokes, and sweep strokes. After we cover strokes, we will head down river to start running some fun, moderate rapids. This is where we will start to refine our river maneuvering skills such as eddy turns, ferries, S turns, and surfing.
Day 2 will begin with a review of whitewater safety and hydrology. After this, we usually warm up in the pool, and introduce the fundamentals of the roll. After lunch, we will head to the Animas, and run a slightly more challenging section of the river. As we paddle, we will continue to work on the maneuvers and stroke combinations introduced the day before. By the end of our second day, participants will have the skills to confidently navigate in class 2 whitewater and surf the friendliest waves. All of the necessary gear, transportation, and lunch will be included with this class.
