Adult Level 1: Basics of Boating
This introductory level class is designed to teach beginners the fundamentals of whitewater kayaking and river safety. We will spend 2 days in this course teaching the necessary skills and focus on boosting your confidence on the water.
Day 1 will cover the basics of how to properly select and care for whitewater gear. From there, we typically move to our on-site, solar heated pool to learn essential whitewater skills like the wet exit, T- rescue, and the bracing strokes. After lunch, we head to a local lake or calm section of the river to learn the forward stroke, sweep stroke, draw strokes, and continue to work on the skills learned earlier in the pool.
Day 2 will consist of river time! We will begin with a class on basic river hydrology, detailed river safety information and basic rescue techniques. Our time on the water will introduce you to basic river maneuvering essentials, as well as continue to work on the fundamentals introduced the day before. By the end of our second day, depending on water levels, we will be able to run some fun, moderate rapids, and begin to develop confidence in faster moving water. This course includes all of the necessary gear, transportation, and lunches.
