2011 Gear Preview: Whitewater Kayaks
2011 is looking up to be an exciting year, with a newly remodeled store, just in time for our 30th anniversary, a revamped whitewater park, and loads of cool new gear hitting the shelves at 4Corners Riversports
This is the first part of a multi-part preview of new gear that you’ll see on the shelves at 4Corners Riversports in 2011.
Industry leader Jackson Kayaks is introducing a slew of new boats this year. First up is the Rockstar, an advance freestyle spin-off of the extremely popular Star series. Available in small, medium and large in both Elite and Super Linear, the Rockstar is a “shorter, faster, snappier” version of the Star, with more volume, a refined profile and a higher seat. If you’re serious about play boating, the Rockstar should be at the top of your list. Each size, along with the All Star, will also be available in carbon fiber this season by special order. The 2011 Hero series is a the third incarnation of the extremely popular Hero line. Shorter, faster, and lighter than the previous generation, the 2011 model promises improved creek performance, better boofing and easier control thanks to a more rounded hull and a redesigned profile. More capable than the Fun series and more playful than the Villain, the Hero is a kayak that boaters of any skill level should seriously consider. Available in both Elite and Super Linear.
Liquid Logic is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year and have introduced the Freeride, a downriver freestyle kayak that fills the gap left by the out-of-production Cross River series. The Freeride is currently in prototype testing and is slated to be available mid-summer in two sizes, 57 and 67 gallons. The Wavesport Project X is a refresh of the popular Project line, once again offered in 48, 56, and 64 gallon models. The new X series has gone the way of most recent playboats: shorter, faster and designed for getting serious air. Add to that a flashy white version of Wavesport’s popular FAT outfitting system and the Project X is a worthy contender to the Jackson dominated freestyle kayak market.
Prijon has added a bigger size in their popular creeker with the Pure XL. As with all of Prijon’s kayaks, the Pure XL is made with HTP Polyethylene, allowing for a pillar-free design and maximum durability. Prijon’s highly adjustable outfitting and spacious hull make this a comfortable, yet high-performance creeker with plenty of room for overnight gear.
AT paddles is expanding their line of whitewater paddles with the AT2 Superduty. With a carbon/aramid braid and limited lifetime warranty on the shaft, the Superduty is AT’s best offering for the punishing conditions of Colorado’s steep creeks.
